Intentional vs. Extensional Search Intent

이번에 발표를 하면서 주요 코멘트로 받았던 것이 Search Intent의 정의 부분인데, 이와 관련된 설명과 예를 찾아야만 가장 즐겁게 공부를 할 수 있을 것 같다. 사실 이 부분은 언어학과 철학에 가까운 부분이긴 하지만, 내 연구의 진행을 위해서 필히 알아야 할 부분인 것 같다.

먼저 선생이 정리하신 부분을 간단하게 언급하자면 아래와 같다.
- Extensional search intent: defined as a set of examples such as Web pages or QA answers
- Intentional search intent: defined as a set of terms (keywords)

이게 좀 어려운 것 같은데, 말하자면 extensional은 예시의 집합과 같고, intentional은 조건이 붙은 언급과 같다는 것이다. 이 말의 예를 들면 {사과, 배, 감} 과 같은 예시의 집합은 {x|x는 과일} 과 같이 언급될 수 있다는 거다.

거의 비슷하긴 한데, 위 참고 페이지에 나와있는 언급 중에서 가장 와닿는 표현은 다음과 같다.
"The backbone of language is made up of instances of words each having an identical sense but a different reference depending on the context of its use."
굳이 갖다 붙이자면 sense가 intentional이고 reference가 extensional이랄까 하는 정도다. 본문에는 예를 들어서 "내 아내"라는 sense가 나에게 refer되는 것과 다른 사람에게 되는 것이 다르다는 것을 들었다.

정리하면서 생각해보니, 아마도 예전 NGD 논문의 서문이 생각난다.
"Words and phrases acquire meaning from the way they are used in society, from their relative semantics to other words and phrases."

이런 내용을 어떻게 정리해야 할까...
